Trails

While we plan to create walking trails through the property, for now you will have to make your own path. In 2025, we will hire a landscape architect to help us develop a comprehensive plan for Hillside Park.

Roland Park’s footpaths, another element of the Olmsted legacy, connect streets throughout the community. Hillside Park lies between two footpaths: Sunset and Litchfield paths.

Hillside Park is a great place for kids to fly kites, play tag, throw frisbees, and just be in nature. With so much open space, the possibilities for fun and discovery are almost endless.

While there isn’t a playground right now, plans for the future include programmed play space. Do you have any ideas? Should Hillside Park have a swing set, monkey bars, slide…? Please let us know what play spaces you would like to see.

Park Plan

In 2008, the Greater Roland Park Master Plan held multiple community charrettes (collaborative planning or design sessions) and asked folks what they would like to see in the future Hillside Park.

A landscape architecture firm, Stone Hill Design was hired to take the list of suggestions and create a DRAFT plan for the park.

Hillside Park Plan

The park was designed to be an Olmsted-inspired park, as the community surrounding the park was created by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. Attributes in the park that follow Olmsted’s principles include winding paths, triangles at intersections, mystery as you wind through the property, separate sections that act like different rooms in the park.

Most of the park is passive recreational space allowing for visitors to spend time in the great gathering space as well as walking through the woods.

There is a section near Falls Road for parking. Recreational space might be added where the old tennis courts were next to Hillside Road.

The park is meant to be welcoming to three generations, so you will see both a playground and lots of benches.
